Age structureand mating status of the responding to sound ' male mosquitoes

چکیده
The age structure of male populations respending to sound were studied with five species of age-known, virgin and non-virgin ma]es in the Iaboratory (Cx, P. molestus, Cx. P. paltens, Ae, aegypti, Ae. albopictus and An. stephensi), and with resting, swarming and sound-trapped males in the nature (Cx. tarsalis, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus and Ae. melanimon). The age of the field-collected males was determined by counting the daily cuticular layers of the mesothoracic furca. The response to sound was greatest for 2-day-eld Cx. P. molestus males and for 3 and 4-day-old males of the other six species. Sound responsiveness of the laboratory males decreased as a function of age and mating experience. The fecundity of male Ae. aeg){pti, but not Cx. P. molestus, was higher for sound-attracted males than males not attracted to sound.

Endogenous regulation of the attraction of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
Even when host attractants are present, there are times when endogenous physiological mechanisms prevent female mosquitoes from responding to them and engaging in host-seeking behavior. These times include a brief postemergence period, periods of the day determined by a circadian clock, and following a blood meal before and after eggs develop, which are controlled by nervous and humoral mechani...
متن کاملMorphology and ornamentation in male magnificent frigatebirds: variation with age class and mating status.
Male magnificent frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) ornamentation includes bright iridescent plumage and a red inflatable gular pouch. These signals are displayed during courtship, along with a drumming sound produced through specialized beak clackings resonating in the gular pouch. The extent of white in the plumage identifies three age classes of nonjuvenile male. Here we investigate how morph...
متن کاملAge and body size influence male sperm capacity of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).
Understanding mosquito mating biology is essential for studies of mosquito behavior, gene flow, population structure, and genetic control. In the current study, we examine the effect of age and body size on spermatozoa number in two laboratory strains of the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti (L.), Thailand and Rockefeller (ROCK), and in wild-collected mosquitoes from Thailand. Body size was a major ...
متن کاملThe check is in the male: male mosquitoes affect female physiology and behavior.
The accessory glands of male mosquitoes may produce substances that are transferred to females during mating and alter female physiology and behavior. The effects of male substances include the inhibition of subsequent female mating behavior, stimulation of oviposition and preoviposition behaviors, and the inhibition of host-seeking behavior. The circadian rhythmicity of females can also be alt...
متن کاملEffect of Mating Status and Age on the Male Mate Choice and Mating Competency in the Common Bed Bug, Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).
We investigated male mate choice and mating competency in the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius L., using video tracking for 10 min per experiment. In the male mate choice experiment, when a male was placed with two females of different mating status, males preferred to initiate copulation with the virgin female more quickly than with the mated female, and the mean total copulation duration wit...
